Hubs sit at the head of your SmarterMail cluster and proxy content and authentication for nodes. Therefore, they direct traffic to its final destination: when a message comes in for bjones@example,com, the hub knows which node bjones@example.com is assigned to, and then sends the message there.
Hubs also contain a number of settings for the cluster as a whole, and remove some of the management of these settings from nodes. For example, most of the protocol work is handed by a hub, SSL certificates are also managed by the hub, etc. Cluster security is also handled by the hub, including IDS Rules and IDS Blocks, Blacklisting / Whitelisting, and SMTP Blocks.
Nodes house domains and mailboxes and act, essentially, as SmarterMail Enterprise installations. Nodes can be enabled or disabled as needed. For example, when splitting a domain, which consists of hosting a single domain on various nodes and moving domain users across those nodes to increase scalability and fault tolerance. In this case, a new node can be brought online to handle a subset of users of the split domain.
a Node marked as a "standby" during configuration is still considered a part of the overall SmarterMail cluster. It is a "hot standby" so it is attached to the appropriate shared volume, receives updates from its respective hub, and is immediately available for failover should an "active" node fail. As such, Standby Nodes are factored into the pricing when configuring a SmarterMail HA installation.
