It also supports standard POP/IMAP clients and offers Exchange ActiveSync as an available add-on. It has a modern webmail UX and can be used with the most popular email clients such as Microsoft Outlook.
What makes SmarterMail stand out?
While KerioConnect and SmarterMail are extremely similar in feature set and supported protocols, SmarterMail is a more enterprise-grade product based on it being the only other email and groupware server on the market that fully supports MAPI and EWS, the protocols that power Outlook. This offers organizations the same features and functionality with SmarterMail that they get when using Exchange or Microsoft 365, but the flexibility for users to continue synchronizing their email accounts with whatever email client they want. In addition, for full "Outlook" functionality, Kerio has its own client to download, and an Outlook Connector for true Exchange-related features. This limits users' abilities to use their email client of choice. Finally, SmarterMail’s licensing model makes it a more attractive offering, stabilizing costs since SmarterMail licenses are server based, not user based. KerioConnect is generally licensed per-user per-month for a 12 month period. Therefore, organizations that add or remove users rather consistently will lack that consistency in their licensing costs, making it more difficult for long-range budget planning. In addition, KerioConnect purchases are only available through KerioConnect resellers -- you cannot by directly from GFI.

The Hidden Constraints

This requires integrations with tools like Teams or Zoom for meetings and internal communication. KerioConnect is also licensed on a per user / per year basis which can affect budgeting and planning as organizations scale. In addition, it's not possible to buy directly from the developer: GFI Software.
