KerioConnect is a self-hosted, enterprise-grade email and groupware solution that, like SmarterMail, is available across Windows, Linux, and MacOS operating systems and has a containerized version distributed via VMWare (OVF and VMX). It bundles integrated email, calendars, contacts, and XMPP chat while offering antispam and security options, just like SmarterMail. It also supports standard POP/IMAP clients and offers Exchange ActiveSync as an available add-on. It has a modern webmail UX and can be used with the most popular email clients such as Microsoft Outlook.
While KerioConnect and SmarterMail are extremely similar in feature set and supported protocols, SmarterMail is a more enterprise-grade product based on it being the only other email and groupware server on the market that fully supports MAPI and EWS, the protocols that power Outlook. This offers organizations the same features and functionality with SmarterMail that they get when using Exchange or Microsoft 365, but the flexibility for users to continue synchronizing their email accounts with whatever email client they want. In addition, for full "Outlook" functionality, Kerio has its own client to download, and an Outlook Connector for true Exchange-related features. This limits users' abilities to use their email client of choice. Finally, SmarterMail’s licensing model makes it a more attractive offering, stabilizing costs since SmarterMail licenses are server based, not user based. KerioConnect is generally licensed per-user per-month for a 12 month period. Therefore, organizations that add or remove users rather consistently will lack that consistency in their licensing costs, making it more difficult for long-range budget planning. In addition, KerioConnect purchases are only available through KerioConnect resellers -- you cannot by directly from GFI.
SmarterMail delivers the full enterprise groupware and collaboration toolkit: email, shared calendars, contacts, tasks, and seamless Outlook plus mobile sync, while removing the need for a custom standalone client for "Exchange" capabilities or Outlook connectors. SmarterMail is the only mail server with native MAPI and EWS support that runs on Windows, Linux, and Docker, with built-in anti-spam and anti-virus included at no extra cost. SmarterMail is designed to scale, while fitting SMBs through large enterprises.
KerioConnect is a capable mail and groupware platform, but it carries several limitations that can create challenges for organizations seeking an all-in-one solution. Unlike more modern collaboration products, KerioConnect has no native real-time audio or video chat, or online meetings for true team collaboration. This requires integrations with tools like Teams or Zoom for meetings and internal communication. KerioConnect also has a smaller ecosystem and community, limiting the availability of plug-ins, integrations, and peer support. KerioConnect is also licensed on a per user / per year basis which can affect budgeting and planning as organizations scale. In addition, it's not possible to buy directly from the developer: GFI Software.
KerioConnect leans into self-hosted control and deep configuration, but SmarterMail keeps day-to-day operations lighter. However, you do get the same enterprise essentials: email, calendars, contacts, tasks, and mobile sync, plus built-in security and real-time collaboration such as online meetings, chat, screen sharing, without bolting on extra tools.
Deployment stays flexible (Windows, Linux, containers) and licensing is simple and predictable. At 250 users, with MAPI and 250 EAS licenses, SmarterMail’s flat cost is $2,650.00 for the first year, dropping to $2, 250 for each year after. KerioConnect's 250-user options, with EAS support, would be subscription based and average about $3.247.50 every year. For teams that want enterprise capability without extra moving parts, SmarterMail is the easier win.
