SpamFoo and the End of Spam

For years, the goal of antispam technology has been simple: minimize the amount of junk that reaches the inbox. Products such as Cyren Premium Antispam and Message Sniffer have helped organizations reduce the noise, and that certainly matters. But "reducing" spam is not the same as solving spam.

At SmarterTools, we are moving away from relying on traditional antispam solutions and focusing on SpamFoo Antispam because we believe the industry can aim higher. SpamFoo does not just filter messages; it gives people and administrators the visibility and feedback loop needed to continually improve how email is classified.

That shift may be the closest we have come to making the end of spam a real possibility.

What IS SpamFoo?

SpamFoo is an antispam platform that evaluates inbound email for spam, phishing, spoofing, and other unwanted or risky content. It uses on-server, AI-driven message analysis plus user feedback to determine where a message belongs, then gives administrators and users tools to understand and refine those decisions.

In practical terms, SpamFoo is not simply a gatekeeper that silently accepts or rejects email. It is an antispam engine people can actually work with. When it makes a classification decision, users and administrators can see the context behind what is happening and help the system become more accurate over time.

What Users Can Accomplish

SpamFoo gives users a cleaner, more trustworthy inbox while allowing them to actively shape their entire mailbox experience and virtually eliminate unwanted spam.

Users can reclassify messages as spam or not spam, immediately influencing how similar messages are handled in the future. These corrections personalize SpamFoo to the user's email patterns while also providing valuable feedback that helps improve SpamFoo overall.

That control extends beyond spam. Users can change classifications such as Primary, Transactions, Promotions, and Updates, with changes taking effect immediately and helping define how future messages are categorized. Over time, SpamFoo adapts to what each user considers important, unwanted, or dangerous.

SpamFoo also provides a dashboard showing overall mail activity and classifications, giving users visibility into how their email is being managed.

The result is more than traditional spam filtering. Users can shape their entire mailbox, establish how future email should be handled, and help make SpamFoo smarter at the same time.

What Administrators Can Accomplish

SpamFoo gives domain and system administrators control and insight that extend beyond the individual inbox. Administrators can monitor how email is being processed, identify delivery and filtering trends, review classifications, and make informed adjustments based on the actual email moving through their domains.

The SpamFoo dashboards are a particularly important part of that experience. They make information about antispam activity visible and actionable: administrators can see what types of messages are being caught, how classifications are trending, which threats are appearing, and where further review may be needed. That visibility changes antispam from a black box into an operational tool.

Those dashboard-level insights simply do not exist in the same way in other antispam products. Traditional products may help block a portion of unwanted email, but they often leave administrators without a clear, centralized view of what the system is seeing, how it is deciding, and how those decisions are changing over time. With SpamFoo, administrators can use data—not guesswork—to manage email protection.

Why Re-Classification is So Helpful

No antispam system can understand every relationship, project, vendor, or business process on day one. Re-classifying messages as spam, not spam, or changing their classification helps close that gap.

When someone marks an unwanted message as spam or changes a classification, such as Transactions to Promotions, they help the engine recognize and properly classify similar messages in the future. When someone rescues a legitimate message by marking it as not spam, they help prevent false positives—the kind of mistake that can hide an important customer request, invoice, or internal communication.

Re-classification gives users a direct role in improving accuracy while providing better signals about how their email patterns are evolving.

The result is an antispam solution that becomes more useful with every interaction rather than one that remains static after it is installed.

Protection Against Phishing and Impersonation

Spam is annoying, sure, but phishing and impersonation are much more serious.

One common example happens when a new employee joins SmarterTools and updates their LinkedIn profile. In the past, that public change could trigger a wave of fraudulent messages that appeared to come from our CEO. The messages would ask the new hire to help pay for gift cards or perform another urgent favor. They were designed to exploit a new employee’s lack of familiarity with normal company communication.

SpamFoo Antispam helps address this kind of attack with its Protected Identities feature. Organizations can protect the identities that attackers are most likely to impersonate—such as executives, finance leaders, and other trusted staff—so that suspicious messages pretending to be from those people can be identified and handled appropriately. Since using SpamFoo Antispam and protected identities, those CEO-impersonation messages aimed at new hires have stopped.

That is a meaningful difference. It is not just about receiving fewer messages; it is about reducing the opportunity for a convincing social-engineering attack to reach the person most likely to be fooled by it.

SpamFoo Phishing Detection

From "Less Spam" to a Useful Inbox

The contrast is clear in day-to-day use. Our CEO receives roughly 300 to 400 spam messages per day. With Cyren Premium Antispam and Message Sniffer, that volume would be reduced by about 50% on a good day. Even then, the remaining flood created enough noise that crucial emails could be missed.

With SpamFoo—and the ability to train the engine through classification feedback—that number has fallen to approximately two or three spam messages in his inbox per day. The inbox is no longer something to endure or triage around; it is something he can actively use and interact with. As our CEO put it: “I feel like I have reclaimed my mailbox. Before, I had to actually turn all notifications off due to how much spam I saw on a daily basis. With SpamFoo, I can actually respond to everything faster.”

That is why SmarterTools is focusing on SpamFoo Antispam. Older tools helped minimize spam. SpamFoo gives users, domain administrators, and system administrators the ability to see more, correct more, and improve protection continuously. We may not be able to declare spam finished today, but SpamFoo makes a future where it spam longer dominates the inbox feel genuinely within reach.

SpamFoo Beta Extension

SmarterTools has worked closely with SpamFoo, and we have agreed to extend the SpamFoo Beta through December 1, 2026. The extension gives more organizations the opportunity to experience how a more visible, trainable approach to antispam can reduce inbox noise, strengthen phishing protection, and make email useful again.
