Frequently Asked Questions

What is the "Free Edition"?
SmarterMail Free supports one domain with up to 10 mailboxes on a standalone installation of SmarterMail, and has most of the features of SmarterMail Enterprise. Features NOT included in the Free Edition include the ability to sync desktop and mobile clients using protocols such as MAPI/EWS or EAS, and the ability to use premium add-ons.
The Free Edition is primarily used to give you an opportunity to try out a standalone installation of SmarterMail before making a purchase decision. However, small companies can use it as a free, full-service email and collaboration server.
How can I try the Free Edition?
All you have to do is simply download SmarterMail standalone for Windows or run the Linux installation commands. Then, when prompted for a License Key during installation, leave that area blank. Once SmarterMail finishes installing, it will run as the Free Edition! If you need more mailboxes or want to test using multiple domains, we'd be happy to provide you with a 30-day trial. What about bug fixes and patches?
Customers with active Maintenance and Support for their licenses have access to ALL new builds of our products. This includes bug fixes, patches, updates and new features.
Can I install a legacy version?
If you have a licensed installation, you own that license forever. If you are running an older version of any product, you will have access to download and install that version from your SmarterTools account. If you have active Maintenance and Support, you can install any current OR legacy version. That means can re-install your existing version (e.g., when migrating hardware) or upgrade to the most current Build. If you do not have active Maintenance and Support, you DO have the ability to install any version up to when the Maintenance and Support expired for that license. However, you cannot go beyond that version without first renewing or reinstating Maintenance and Support.
Can I use a new license on an older installation?
Yes! Our licenses are backwards compatible, meaning a newer license can be used on any older version of the software as long as Maintenance and Support is active for the license.
Where can I check the status of my Maintenance and Support?
Customers have full access to complete details of any license they own. By logging into your SmarterTools account and going to your Licenses page, you'll see every license assigned to that account, and its complete details. This includes what add-ons are associated to each license and the current status of Maintenance and Support for it.
