Troubleshooting: There was an error trying to stop the service STWebSvr

Software affected: SmarterTicket 2.x

Symptoms

The included web server should be stopped when you setup SmarterTicket under IIS.  Occasionally, the following problem has been known to happen when you go to Start -> Program Files -> SmarterTools -> SmarterTicket -> Configure SmarterTicket Web Server.

When attempting to follow the instructions in the online help to stop the SmarterTicket Web Server, you get the following error message:

There was an error trying to stop the service STWebSvr

Resolution

Manually stop and disable the service by following these steps:

  • Go into your control panel
  • Go to Administrative Tools
  • Choose Services
  • Find the ST Web Server in the list
  • Right click it and choose properties
  • Change Startup Type to disabled
  • Click Apply
  • Click Stop
  • Click OK
  • The only difference with this approach is that when an upgrade is installed of SmarterTicket, the service could start up again, and you'd have to repeat this process.
