    Active Sync and webmail lockout

    Hi,

We're experiencing a duplicateable error ... although not exactly sure how to duplicate it yet and since I can't find a similar issue by searching the boards, I am hoping someone else has run across this and a resolution.

We're running the latest version of SM Ent 6.x with CommTouch and a 25 user ActiveSync license. The server itself is a Win2008 ESXi VMWare Virtual server with plenty of horsepower and separate virtual discs for logs, spool, mail and OS. We're processing about 2.5 Million messages a month for about 500 users/150 domains.

The mail server has 1 primary IP with an SSL certificate and 1 additional IP with its own certificate. The websites run independently under IIS 7.

We've added the ActiveSync license specifically for a couple of our iPhone users - not me unfortunately no good ATT coverage - but I have been testing an ActiveSync connection with an iPod Touch over wifi. The domain that I am testing with is the additional domain that has a unique IP and its own SSL Cert.

ActiveSync works great ... except that 3 times in the past 48 hours, *something* in the ActiveSync connection has caused the webmail server to stop accepting connections both via domain name and ip address , which in turn breaks the ActiveSync connection with the device. Luckily, for now, the only webmail connection that is broken is the one for the 2nd IIS website - the one I am testing with, but this is:

    1. a pretty big inconvenience since the only way I have been able to restart webmail is by issuing a restart command on the IIS7 webserver ... not just the website that is "stuck", but the whole IIS webserver, which causes a quick outage/logout for any users that are accessing the "master" SmarterMail webmail interface.

    2. A huge concern for me that this could happen on the "master" SmarterMail website once we open ActiveSync up to more users.

The more troublesome part about my 2nd concern is that the web services appear up to our monitoring devices (not just ping, but http checks) so we really don't know when webmail is locked up unless we try to access it.

Some other confusing issues here that occur when webmail is down:

    1. Mail still functions - smtp, pop3, imap all deliver as normal. Only webmail and ActiveSync appear to be effected.

    2. I can access webmail via domain and IP address if I browse to them on the server that SmarterMail is installed on. I cannot access the webmail site via ip or domain from any other server, LAN or WAN.

    3. webmail for the main SmarterMail website appears to be uneffected

    4. If I take a spare IP address and bind it to the "broken" webmail interface, I cannot access that IP either, if I move the IP to the main webmail interface, I can access webmail through that ip.

We do have detailed logging on for the SM server and we log for the IIS sites.

Anyone have any ideas or suggestions ... or maybe someone from SM can chime in?

    thanks!
