SmarterStats v5 - Server 2008R2 - IIS7 Login Issues - Login Fine with SmarterStats Web Server

I just installed SmarterStats v5 on my Dedicated Server 2008R2 machine,  If I use the SmarterStats Web Server I can login without any problems,  but when I switch to IIS7 it says  "Please enter your Site ID. The Site ID is the number assigned to the particular site you are trying to log into." using the same login info, If I switch back to the SmarterStats Web Server I log right it,  I have tried this 3-4 times and everytime IIS does not work,  SmarterStats Web Server does,  I have tried deleting the password in "AppConfig.XML" - Same results....

I have setup SmarterStats v2 through 4 numerous times with older Window Server versions with no problems.

The website comes up with SmarterStats login screen just fine in IIS - just does not accept my login.

I have read the through the forums and could only find this which had the same problem but did not help  http://www.smartertools.com/forums/p/26295/72915.aspx#72915

Anyone have any suggestions????   CGI,exe  - ISAPI.dll is enabled in IIS module mappings,   can't think of what else.

    Thanks,

The most recent build of SmarterStats 5 should run fine in integrated pipeline mode but if you are using that you may want to try changing that to use an application pool that runs under classic mode.

    Byron,

Thanks for your prompt reply, SmarterTools monitoring of the forum is always excellent and a big selling point and why I own 5 smartertool licenses now.

I have tried every application pool possible and both integrated and classic modes and still having the same problem,  any other thoughts?

    Thanks,

    Bryan

    Just a bit more information-

This worked on this server before I formatted it yesterday,  and Smartermail v4 logs in using IIS just fine,  I also tried using SmarterMail Application Pool for SmarterStats and it still did not work -  and as always the SmarterStats Web Server works fine when using the same login/password as when using IIS that fails.

    Fixed.... but not sure how.

Uninstalled SmarterStats,  Uninstalled .NET Framework v3.5.1 via Features under Server  Manager, rebooted,   installed v3.5.1 again through features,  did a Windows Update (that included SP1 for SQL)  reinstalled SmarterStats and Bada Boom Bada Bang .... it worked.

    Ah, that's good.

I looked at the login code and it turns out that error message get's displayed on a general exception (in addition to when that is actually  the specific error) and there wasn't any logging of the exception.  Anyway, we are now logging that exception in case an issue like this occurs in the future.

Re: SmarterStats v5 - Server 2008R2 - IIS7 Login Issues - Login Fine with SmarterStats Web Server

    Byron,

As always Tech Support does a great job at SmartTools following up here in the forum and improving its products !!!!!!

On a side note that has really been bugging me big time,  I wish the SmartMail license upgrade prices did not go up so much,  Last time I went from v2  (50) User,  to v4 (Unlimited) User and it cost me $389 which was reasonable,  this time if I could afford it to go from v4 (Unlimited)  to v6 (Unlimited)  would cost $934 which is a ridiculous price increase.  In my opinion this should have been around $500 to $600 max.  This has been my only disappointment with SmartTools in the 4-5 years I have been a customer.

I now also have a 50 user Smartermail v6 license which came with a hosting panel purchase - and it only costs $800 to upgrade it to unlimited, or I can choose a lesser package that will fit my needs like a 1000 mailboxes for $400.   -  THIS JUST ADDS SALT TO MY WOUNDS REGARDING MY v4 License - This tells me you have no value to me being a loyal past customer in comparison  !!!!!!!!!

I know people were complaining about new versions coming out soon after their purchases,  and the new licenese now includes a 1 year upgrade protection,  but for the $300 -$400 cost I would rather go back to the old protection time period.

Honestly I feel like with my v4 Unlimited License I really got SCREWED on my upgrade choices/cost for v6.

I passed your concerns to the correct people here.

I also wanted to follow up on this issue.  Another customer opened a support ticket for the same thing and it turned out to be a permissions problem with the identity the SmarterStats application pool was running under.  That app pool was using ApplicationPoolIdentity as it's identity, which did not have permissions to write to config files in the MRS directory.  I could not add permissions for ApplicationPoolIdentity though as it is not an actual user, so the fix was to change the app pool to use Network Service and add the appropriate permissions for that to the SmarterStats MRS\App_Data\Config directory (including sub directories).

Re: SmarterStats v5 - Server 2008R2 - IIS7 Login Issues - Login Fine with SmarterStats Web Server

    Hi all,

I'm experiencing same problem mentioned by Cobra: on Windows Server 2008 R2 64bit SmarterStats 5.x works fine with its own web server, but doesn't allow to login if switched on IIS, keeping saying "Please enter your Site ID. The Site ID is the number assigned to the particular site you are trying to log into.".

I need to use IIS because I have to host other services. I have also tried to uninstall, re-install as done by Cobra, but no luck.

    Anyone has some suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Ale.

Re: SmarterStats v5 - Server 2008R2 - IIS7 Login Issues - Login Fine with SmarterStats Web Server

    Ale,

I believe it was an applicationpool identity permssion error......  at least as I remember.... I do know now SmarterStats is now running off of IIS although I am using the "applicationpoolidenity"  instead of Byron's suggestion,  but I think I ended up resetting its password or changing a permission somewhere.

I should have came here and posted my final solution, I normally would have,  but it was a bad period of migration.  I am beginning to seriously consider Linux after my last Microsoft migration - took me nearly 6 weeks of working out problems going from Server 2008 to Server 2008r2, having to upgrade software,  redo the way I did things (no longer having FrontPage Extension Support)  and re-entering clients on a new hosting panel manually.

The penguins are talking to me,  can they convert a MSCE, MCP to the other side.... they just might!!!!

     Bryan,

thanks for your reply, even if I couldn't realize which permission to change. Any help from SmarterTools support would be appreciated.

Re Microsoft migration: I totally agree with you. I run Windows Server for .NET applications like SmarterStats and SmarterMail, but Linux is much more powerful and flexible as web server.

Thanks again, please post the solution if you can remember it!

    Ale.

We are having the issues on IIS6 as well, We have tried various fixes, ie app pools, etc, etc and no luck still, only works under the smartermail webserver, Is this not related to a ms patch.

Yes, really disappointing, I set up a dedicated machine and I cannot get what should be guaranteed. Any support from SmarterTools would be really appreciated.

It looks like its somehing to do with impersonation.

Try this is seems to have resolved my issue and I am able to login again after doing this. Mine is in iis6 but im sure ii7 is the same.

    1. Go into iis and open the asp.net tab
    2. Click the edit configuration button (not the global )
    3.  Click the application tab
    4. at the bottom it has an checkbox to enable local impersonation
    5. Click the box add an administrative user login an password, apply the changes and then try your login, it should work now, if it does go back in to the application tab turn off local impersonation and save and exit.
    6. Logout and login again and it should work fine now..

ST hasnt helped so I decide to investigate this myself and found this was due to impersonation, I havent checked the web.config before and after to see if anything was changed, but at leased my smarterstats is running again.Big Smile
