Q: What new features will Smartermail 6.0 bring?

Can someone from ST provide us with a sneak preview of new features in the upcoming version of SM?
And when are the beta's planned?

Now that the WM interface looks fine some IMO overdue features:
    - SyncML support for email, not just contacts etc
    - Improved content filtering (Long-time #1 of course: Global filters, more actions like "Mark as read" etc.)
    - Improved bayesian filtering
    - Support for URIBL checking
    - ...

    Thanks!

I can't give a list of features at this point, but I can confirm that some of these items may or may not be in SmarterMail 6. Smile

We will be releasing actual information and scheduling for SmarterMail 6 sometime soon, so stay tuned.

I pray to the SmarterMail gods for a "download all attachments" feature. I often get files from clients that contain 25 documents and they are too computer challenged to send them in a .ZIP file. So I have to sit there and download each individually.

Is there anyway I could download all attachments in one click/step? Please think about it for SM6. Honestly that's my biggest complaint and I've been using SM for a few years now.

I'd also like a few real skin options included to pick from, I certainly don't have time to make my own.

I am mostly interested in 2 features..

    1) Limit CPU usage..due to all the mailings smarter mail just hogs all resources and perminetly forces IIS to crash until restart (actually preferably fix this before 6.0)

    2) Allow use for multiple IPs..if not multiple atleast 2 ( one for sending solo mail and one for bulk mail)

IMO, its a thing that prevent some peoples from switching from email client (such as Outlook) to SmarterMail Web environment.

Its a pain in the back to download all the attachments..

Well I would hope they'd add this in BEFORE version 6, but SpamAssassin needs to be fixed...it's the single biggest issue with SM. Since actually fixing the SpamAssassin issues internally would be impossible, the next best thing would be to auto stop / start it. So, to the SpamAssassin settings, add this:

(checkbox) Auto stop/start SpamAssassin based on spool size
Stop SpamAssassin if spool grows to over [    ] messages
Restart SpamAssassin when spool shrinks below [     ] messages

That way, I could check the box, enter 100 in the first box, 25 in the second, and hopefully, not have to worry about 2 hour mail backups or babysitting the mail server anymore.

The best fix is to setup SpamAssassin on a Linux server.

Well, we tried running SAVASM through a virtual machine and it was a disaster (30 seconds / message).

Somebody on here suggested maybe our DNS servers are slow, and I've posted a couple of messages asking for recommendations on how to test for that, but haven't seen any suggestions.

My point is that if the problem is our DNS servers (since our SM server processes fewer than 10k messages / day and this is well within what ST claims to be workable in terms of SpamAssassin's default operation) then setting up a Linux box to run SA, if it's still going through our DNS, isn't going to help, either.

And, besides all of that, it would be nice if a 3rd party setup wasn't needed to fix something that's built-in to SmarterMail. My suggestion above should, I would think, work for a lot of people experiencing the same issue that we are with it.

The SpamAssassin version bundled with SmarterMail is a simple windows port of the Linux version. From our experience, it did the job for a while but we had serious memory usage issues as our messaging needs kept growing. By using dedicated (or VM) linux services, you can also benefit from the multithreading functionnality, which is not available on the windows port.

As for DNS, we never had any problem with it... just serious memory usage from the SPAMD.EXE process

Re: Q: What new features will Smartermail 6.0 bring?

All of the items that have been brought up here so far a definitely needed; however I'd like to ask for a few usability enhancements that drive me crazy switching from OWA to SM's web interface (and Exchange -> SM in general)...

1 - put 'reply / reply all / Forward / Print' options on the message context menu for goodness' sake.... I shouldn't have to move all across the screen (or open a message) just to do this funtion....

2 - Step up to the plate and license Exchange Activesync from Microsoft.  It's a FAR, FAR, FAR superior technology to SyncML and would bring Smartermail up-to-par with other (ahem... Exchange) offerings.  SyncML blows - plain and simple.  It's far too slow, doesn't support e-mail syncing (against an e-mail server... LOL - go figure that logic) and is just another layer of complexity for my users to deal with in order to get 'what they expect'.

C'mon guys - please get Exchange Activesync.....

3 - Better Outlook client support - I have a large mailbox (almost 200MB) and Outlook (using IMAP) will report that the server constantly sends incorrect message ID's and Outlook 2007 will then scramble my mailbox data by combining messages, blanking others, etc.  This didn't start happening until the mailbox started getting past 100MB or so, so I see it as a scaling issue on SM's side.

It also happend when I tried using Thunderbird instead of Outlook.  In fact, it was worse with Thunderbird.  It scrambled the entire mailbox right off the bat and I had to restore from a backup.  So, to me if it happens using two very recent (and patched up-to-date) clients, then the mail server and its implementation of the IMAP protocol is to blame.

The same thing doesn't happen using IMAP on Exchange 2003 or Exchange 2007...

I suppose 'Smartermail cached mode' (or something similar to Outlook Cached mode) is too much to ask for?

Maybe I am being unrealistic in my expectations and need to go back to Exchange... I just thought SM would be more on-par with Exchange since it bills itself as "the low-cost alternative".

    Thanks,
     - Whitney

totally agree on this. we already had some customers moving to other providers just because they have hosted exchange and you can synchronize it with your mobile-phone. it just works and it's simple to use.

We tested syncml on nokia phones, and really it's by far not as good as activesync.

     Please go for it!

I'll put in a vote for this too. We moved to 5.5 because we were told that the sync was greatly improved over 4.X. So far we have seen no improvement in SmartermailSync, and SyncML doesn't work for us since we have lots of contacts and calendar info.
