    Nokia SyncML Support? WBXML

    Hi,

Having recently upgraded my servers to Smartermail V5 Enterprise for the Sync features, I am finding it very difficult to sync my mobile phone Nokia E71 with Smartermail.

So far i have synced email by using IMAP and I have tried to create a sync profile on the phone to my mail server for calendar and contacts however the server returns the error:

22:08:53 [774e29fb7081428ca01283170777e415] Request is in unsupported format: application/vnd.syncml+wbxml

I have also tried Funambol which does work with the phone however it doesnt seem to be syncing my calendar and contacts with Smartermail through IMAP.

Is there any plans to add WBXML support to Smartermail or is there any clear instructions on how I can view my smartermail contacts & calendar on my mobile phone. I have quite a few customers who were excited about the upgrade but now quite disapointed.

    Thanks Aaron

I have done some research into this and have contacted Smarter Tools about it. See this thread.

Smarter Tools should be considering Nokia devices more seriously; Nokia leads world-wide market share of the mobile phone market, and ignoring it seems short-sighted. Also, the N95 and E71 are incredible devices that are becoming quite popular in the US.

I don't believe the Java funambol client supports syncing contacts and calendars. I tried this approach as well.

I'd like to add my support for ST including WBXML compatibility and providing greater Nokia support across the board.

SyncML and IMAP IDLE were clearly never tested on a Nokia smart phone by ST - a real shame considering the overlapping level of functionality Nokia E & N series phones have built-in (no need for additional middleware like Funambol), and just how many millions of these devices exist (particularly in Europe and increasingly in the USA since the launch of the E71)

Anyone else use a Nokia phone and want to sync with SmarterMail?

Yes we also would like to see Syncml support for Nokia phones.
Nokia phones are very popular over here.

With the latest Nokias really hitting hard for the business market, I am seeing a lot more IT guys moving over as an better alternative to blackberry. As with any technology, once the IT guys start moving over, it's a BIG sign of a major reshift. Jeff/Tim, if you get to see this.. This would be something worth considering sooner than too late, and you already invested 90% of the effort already.

    Re: Nokia SyncML Support? WBXML

Interesting point that the Nokia phones are not supported since Nokia is listed as one of the company's that originally developed the SyncML protocol specifications.

There is a company called Synthesis that developes SyncML servers and clients and SDK's for many platforms. Their SyncML products, as well as applications based on their SDK's, do not seem to be supported by SmarterMail either.  SmarterMail rejects connections from them with the same message that you are seeing on your Nokia phone.

Note that in this instance, my two devices are an iPhone 3G and a Blackberry Curve. I would love to get rid of the Blackberry if the iPhone syncing with Contacts and Tasks were supported by SmarterMail.

Being able to sync calendar, contacts, and tasks with SmarterMail was the single biggest reason for purchasing SmarterMail Enterprise.  But since Funambol seems to be the only client supported by SmarterMail for SyncML, and Funambol does not sync Calendar or Task items on the iPhone, it seems to have been a waste.

There has been a big call for activesync support in version 6 which would be the ultimate and would work with nokia (mail 4 exchange), iphone but not too sure about blackberry.

I wonder if we can get connectors that can connect to smartermail via syncml and connect ot mobile devices by activesync?

I hope we will get activesync in version 6 but regarding the missing support of WBXML in smartermail implementaion of syncml is
    a big problem for us.

In another forum about syncml somebody posted the following regarding WBXML support:

"It looks like the SmarterMail Enterprise server does not support WBXML encoding: Which means that this server is NOT a compliant implementation of SyncML. With XML only, it will work with almost no phone that has SyncML built-in, like all all Nokia, SonyEricsson (except medieval P800), Samsung, Motorola etc. All these use WBXML."

I do find it fustrating that the only sync support is pretty much with outlook and Windows mobile. Instead of using the open standard to reach more devices, it is giving more options for the same device, which is kind of moving sideways than upwards or forwards.

I really do hope that the addtional support is completed. The worst part is that even IMAP hasn't been completed, and enabling it means that devices like Nokia can't collect any email, which means everything else loses the benefit as it has to be disabled to support all the various devices. It's a real blow..
