Sync will not appear in Outlook 2003

    Sync will not appear in Outlook 2003

    I've searched these forums and cannot find a solution to my problem.  I have just downloaded and installed SmarterMail Sync for Outlook 2003.  I see no evidence in Outlook that it installed (no buttons) and it's not showing in any Views.  I'm running Windows XP Professional with .NET 2.0 installed.

    The COM Add-In shows the Sync app but it is unchecked.  When I check it and restart Outlook it remains unchecked.  I have no other sync applications loaded right now.

    What else am I missing?

    goto Help->About Microsoft Outlook and click the Disabled Items button and see if Sync is listed there. If it is click enable and see if that fixes your problem.

    Thanks but sorry no.  It says 'There are no disabled items.'

    I noticed a reference in another chain in regards to a folder that I would find a SmarterMail Sync log.  Is there a place on XP that I can find the log?  Any other ideas?

    That log file is mostly for logging errors once the tool is running it doesn't really help much with loading issues.  Do you have any other addins loaded in Outlook?

    No other add-ins show in the COM Add-Ins except SmarterMail.  In the Add-In Manager, "Exchange Extensions property pages" is there and checked.  Not sure why it's there - I don't use Exchange.

    That addin is normal and always there.  If you could check your registry settings (start->run->regedit) at HKEY_CURRENT_USER(or LOCAL_MACHINE depending on how you installed)->Software->Microsoft->Office->Outlook->Addins->SmarterMailSync.Connect and tell me the value for LoadBehavior.

    Try changing that to 3.

    Switched value to 3.  Lauched Outlook.  COM Add-In box for SmarterMail Sync was unchecked.  Load Behavior - Not Loaded.  A runtime error occurred during the loading of the COM Add-In.

    Should I reinstall the Sync app again?  Do I need to manually register the .dll's?

    ok lets try this go to C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\SmarterTools\SmarterMailSync\Outlook  edit the settings.xml file and change IsLogging to true if it is not then make sure the registry value is set to 3 again and restart outlook and try to load it and see if sync creates a log file file in that same directory.

    Perhaps we are getting somewhere.  There is not SmarterTools folder in any of the Local Settings\Application Data folders.  Perhaps it didn't load completely.

    I made a special debug build of Sync I want you to try.  Uninstall Sync and install http://www.smartertools.com/downloads/smartermailsync/4.x/SmarterMailSyncForOutlook2003Debug.exe  this will create a file in your C: drive named SyncLog.txt when you try to load the add-in.  Hopefully this will tell us what is going wrong.

    I appreciate your help with this Ryan.  I did the uninstall and reinstalled the debug version.  There was not SyncLog.txt file to be found anywhere on my hard drive.  After installing, I re-opened Outlook.  Checked the app in COM Add-Ins (it was unchecked).  I also changed the register edit item we discuss to a '3'.  I did this a few times and did a complete search of my hard drive for a SyncLog.txt file.  Nothing showed up.

    Still no log and no sync running.  I did notice one think when I uninstalled SmarterMail Sync.  I received an error, "Error 1404.  Could not delete key \SOFTWARE\CLASSESS."  I have admin rights and checked the permissions in regedit and I have full rights.  Not sure why I am getting this error.

    This is sounding like there may be an issue with the registry.  If you could download a utility from Microsoft called RegMon http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/Regmon.mspx.  Run that and add a filter for 1a75d69c-3df5-489b-bec2-7088257feedc;smartermail;   then clear Regmon and start Outlook after doing the LoadBehavior=3 thing.  It should fill the regmon window with a bunch of lines.  Goto File->save and send the saved log file to me at submit@smartertools.com
