    SM4 vs SM5 spam performance

    Hi guys,

Does any one have any knowledge of the performance of SM 4.3.2760 vs the new SM5. Specifically in terms of spamassassin or spam performance in general. This is on Win2000.

The problem is this, we have about 80-90 inboxes. Many of them have to send large attachments or large emails, and everything is just clogging up on spamassassin, mainly because its only single threaded on win2000, but this isn't something I can do anything about.

I'm concerned if we add any more users to the server that it'll just constantly fall over with spamd eating up all the virtual memory and causing the machine to have to restart. Its a real nightmare at the moment.

In lieu of getting better/faster/more poweful machine to sit it on, will upgrading to SM5 give me a noticeable increase in performance and stability, and is upgrading from 4 to 5 easy, and will my users keep all their emails, settings etc during the upgrade?

We use SM in combination with Plesk and Plesk has an option to prevent spam checking documents >n KB.  When we enabled this, it stopped our issues with spamd.exe consuming all our RAM.  I don't understand how Plesk interacts with SM in terms of this feature, but I wonder if there's an option hidden in SM somewhere?

Hi Rich, I don't think there is any difference in the spam processing. SpamAssasin is still the same and seems to function equally. I think SM5 in general feels a little snappier though. Some of the slow bugs I had in SM4 are now gone.

I recently had to ditch my VPS server and go dedicated with the SAVASM Virtual Maching running Spam Assasin on Linux. Yes, that's completely awesome!!

I wonder if you can run SAVASM on your machine? The idea of spam checking based on message size might be a winner as well.

SmarterMail 5 has the option to not pass messages over a certain size to SpamAssassin as well. Other than that, though, SpamAssassin is the same in version 4 and 5.
