I would *really* like to see some advancement in this area, maybe for 5.x? Other competing software packages are much stronger in terms of authentication options, namely Zimbra, @mail, the usual *nix open source servers. Beefing up LDAP support (not just for address lists) would open SM up to much larger enterprises. Some important features are LDAP standards compliance (i.e. not just Active Directory), password changing option, and *documentation*. SmarterMail lists "Active Directory Authentication" as a feature but there is so little information on it. Restricting to Active Directory makes it very cumbersome for anyone who has other services that authenticate to a more compliant LDAP server (e.g. OpenLDAP).
Any chance ST has or will make plans for this in the near future? I have been using SM for a long time, but my company is getting to the point that managing separate accounts for everything is becoming infeasible.
Thanks,
Colin
