Sync Setup Questions...
Even after almost two decades in the computer biz, I feel dumber than a stump in trying to use SmarterMailSync with Outlook 2007. I'm just trying to get the calendars and contacts shared between a few people, so that should be simple.
However, the documentation is poor when it is not lacking, and I guess other people are a lot smarter than I am if they are getting it to work. I even spent some time on the phone with ST and that did not clarify anything.
Does someone have a list of steps (1, 2, 3, etc.) to set up just a few people so that each of them can share their calendars and contacts with the others? There's something about creating a shared resource, but that does not seem to be working in the way I interpreted the slim pickings in Help and the KB.
Any guidance will be appreciated...

Re: Sync Setup Questions...
guiguy - I'm having the same issues. The documentation doesn't really help either. All I want to do is set up a global contact list - which seems simple enough to do, but I'm having no luck. I'm still working on it, and researching so if I discover the fountain of youth and accomplish this, I'll be sure to let you know how to do it. If you could do the same I would appreciate it.

Re: Sync Setup Questions...
Of course I will. However, I'm a bit surprised--if not put off--that this issue has not been replied to.
ST has a great feature here, but it's just not very well documented, and that makes it a not-so-good feature.
Someone at support sent me a diagram, but, it too was not very helpful. I've tried to create another one just for some feedback, but I keep getting stuck so it's not even worth posting. Anyway, here's what they sent me.
If anyone can help clarify the difference between mapping and adding to Outlook, it would be appreciated.

Re: Sync Setup Questions...
SmarterMail Sync exists to synchronize items from your webmail to your Outlook. If you can't see the item you want to sync in your webmail, you will not be able to access it from Sync. So, before even getting sync involved, lets make sure that you have access to the item you want to sync in the web interface. Let's say, for example, that your username is guiguy, and my username is jlance, and we're on the same domain. You want to sync with my calendar. - I need to share my calendar with you. To do this, I go to My Shared Resources. I click Add Share, then My Calendar, next, click share with "Users", then type "guiguy" in the textbox. I want to give you access of Full Control. Click Save.
- Now, you need to create a "Map" to this resource. (Much like making a mapped network drive in Windows). In your account, click My Mapped Resources. Now click Attach to Resource. This will display a list of all items you have access to. Find jlance/My Calendar/Calendar in the list, and click attach.
- Now, you should be able to see the new calendar available in the calendar section.
- Now, load Outlook and click on SmarterMail Sync, Accounts. Add a new account. Type in the information using your account name and password.
- Hit next, which will show you what capabilities the server has. Hit next again, and it will ask you which items you want to sync. Uncheck everything except Calendars. Click the "..." button next to SmarterMail:. This will ask you what you want to sync to. Under "Shared Folders" select "My Calendar on jlance" and press OK. If you want to create a new Calendar Folder in outlook to hold these events (you do), click on the "..." next to Outlook: and click New... Give it a name of "JLance's calendar" or something, and select Folder contains Calendar Items. Hit Ok, Ok
- Click Next and choose whether to sync at startup or shutdown, and next again.
- Finish.
- Now click Synchronize in the SmarterMail Sync bar and select the account you just added. After a moment, it should sync all the calendar events over.

Re: Sync Setup Questions...
Thanks, James...
That's almost what I need. However, syncronizing on startup or shutdown is useless when people leave their computers on all day long and still create lots of activities in their calendar.
The "Add to Outlook" (I believe it's called) seems to synch each time mail is sent/received. While still not real-time, if you have Outlook set up to send/receive every 3 minutes, that's good enough.
So how do we set it up that way????
TIA...

To use "Add to Outlook" it's easy as clicking the button while looking at a contact list or calendar. Perform the sharing/mapping steps as described above, then view the contact list or calendar list and click "Add to Outlook". Press OK, then hit OK when Outlook asks you if its OK to add the list.

Re: Sync Setup Questions...
Thanks...
I started from scratch, and now, after downloading and installing the synch executable, I'm not seeing SmarterMail Sync anywhere on the toolbars or menus. This sounds dumb, but, where is the thing????

Re: Sync Setup Questions...
It's not dumb, I ran into this issue as well....and I think it's a Vista issue. So if you're running Vista, the first thing I would check is to see if the smartermail 'Add In' is there. To do this, go to Tools in Outlook, then Options, click the 'Other' tab, then Advanced Options, click the COM Add Ins button at the bottom. You should see the Add In "SmartMailSync.connect" with a check next to it. I think the problem I was having was it wouldn't stay checked. So if that's the case, as it was with me, you will have to add it manually. So click Add, then you will need to browse to it: c:\program files\Smarter Tools\Smartermail Sync\Outlook\SmartmailSyncShim.dll. That should do it.

You do not need SmarterMail Sync installed to use Add to Outlook

Re: Sync Setup Questions...
Now I'm totally confused. Let me try to reiterate what I'm trying to accomplish...
It's important that my assistant and I keep in synch with contacts, calendar, and tasks. We both have to know any changes that happen to either's Outlook. It's ok if she does not have her own calendar but actually uses mine. The same with the contacts and tasks. The issue is that there are many changes during the course of the day and we need more updating than when we open or close Outlook. Ideally, the updates would occur each time there is a send/receive. Both computers are set to automatically send/receive every 3 minutes.
So, the question is: what's the best way to accomplish this?
TIA for your patience with this...

Re: Sync Setup Questions...
I got my contacts to share but nothing else. This is a bit of a problem as I have a customer complaining about Imap not showing all the folders on startup until you "get" the folder list from the server....outlook 2003. I am off to try Thunderbird, maybe that will do it. However, customer will want it working in Outlook.
