    SmarterMail 4 and GZIP, issues with zip files

    I'm running IIS6 with GZIP Enabled, when downloading zip files from the SM Interface they are corrupted.

    After turning GZIP off this problem is fixed

    Now the question is why GZIP would corrupt the zip files. It doesn’t do it to rar files or another type of file I’ve tested.

    I don’t have the problem when download ZIP files when not using SM.

    Any ideas you have on this would be great

    Re: SmarterMail 4 and GZIP, issues with zip files

     I don't have a solution for you, but I just wanted to bump this as I've also experienced the problem. However, its not just zip files that were affected for me, the entire webmail became unusable and all the pages came down as weird glyphs. This was using sm4 on IIS5

    I assume from this that smartermail is using its own gzipping and that the two combined meant that the browser was deflating one layer of compression but not the other? Actually, I notice using YSlow with Firebug that login.aspx is gzipped.

    This may become a problem for us when our clients want gzip compression on their aspx pages as we can't set it on a per site basis.

    Any way to turn off the built-in compression in SM4?

     You can turn off the compression for the Mail website by removing the following lines from the web.config:

        <httpModules>
          <add name="CompressionModule" type="blowery.Web.HttpCompress.HttpModule, blowery.web.HttpCompress"/>
        </httpModules>

    Re: SmarterMail 4 and GZIP, issues with zip files

    Hi,

    We appear to be having an issue that might be related.  We are using version 5.1 of Smartermail Enterprise and we are not able to use Windows XP to unzip our email archive .zip files.  However, we can use 7zip to unzip these files.  We'd rather not have to use 7zip to unzip the files, though.  Is Smartermail now using a new compression method that older decompression software cannot understand?  If so, is there anyway to revert back to an older compression method?
