    PDF attachments not appearing

I have a customer that receives faxes from his corporate office that are sent to his email as PDF's.  If he routes them to another email (e.g. HotMail, GMail, etc.) they appear.  But when routed to his SmarterMail account on our mail server, the attachment does not appear.  There is an icon, and the size indicates the presence of the attachment, but it does not render inline nor does it appear when the attachment icon is clicked.

    Re: PDF attachments not appearing

I am following up because I have not heard back from anyone.  Is there a solution here, or do I need to open a ticket of some kind?

I have the case, that sometimes PDF are not recognized as PDF. There is an unknown attachment, when I click to it Windows askes me with which software I like to open it, I choos Adobe Reader and it works. This does not happen with all PDF, some are good, some not. With newest version 4.1 from SmarterMail, and IMAP in Eudora, newest version 7.1.0.9.

Are they sending from Outlook?  View the email as RAW content and see if you can find winmail.dat.  If so, this is associated with the way Outlook sometimes packages attachments and SM cannot parse them. To avoid this, tell Outlook to send in Plain Text.

    Thank you for responding.

No, they are being generated by FAX software.  Instead of sending TIFF's, this software creates a PDF.  I am not sure my customer knows who the FAX software vendor is.

Is your customer using the webmail to read their emails or through a client (outlook, etc) ?

Im pretty sure the .dat issue has been corrected in the beta which should be released soon.

    Hello Frizt

Are you using any anti-virus software (specifically Symantec)? If you are; does disabling it change the results?

    Thank you,

    Justin

SmarterMail 4.2 will now show attachments sent as Outlook's winmail.dat format.

In regards to the original question, do you see the actual attachment in the raw content? Can you post the header (it will look something like this)

Thank you for replying.  I viewed the source of an affected email, and it shows (in part):

I hope this is of help.  I contacted the client and requested he identify the FAX software.  His firm is using Disc Com and in two weeks it will be switched to MultiTech.

    Again, thanks.

Neither of those parts are attachments, are there any others? Anything that says Content-Disposition: attachment, or a filename="somefilename.pdf"

Sorry - no such indication.  The attachment was supposed to be rx.pdf.  When sent to my account at cox.net, the attachment appears, but not through SmarterMail.

    Re: PDF attachments not appearing

    Ken,

By the looks of it, you never received a reply with a solution. Did you ever get the PDF attachement resolved?

I have a similar issue...and here's what I found (for those of you still looking for a solution)

Our Unix server generates pdf files of our invoices and emails them to our customers,

    using a text2pdf converter v1.2 (from Pro-Sys Consultants)

If our customers atempt to open the email in smartermail, they get a message full of text characters

(i assume is the code of the pdf file) and NO ATTACHMENT!

Yet, if the same email message is downloaded to a client such as Outlook/ Outlook express, the attachment is readable!

After some digging around, I found that the PDF version (view properties on a pdf file and click the "PDF" tab)

on the "unreadable" attachments is 1.1, yet when I send a pdf in version 1.4 or 1.5, it is "readable".

Seems to be an issue with the PDF Version. I'll post back later.

    Puas

PS. There is another option within the "PDF" tab, "Fast Web View"...seemed to be a likely culprit, but after some testing, made no difference.
