    spamd and resource usage

Howdy, it sems there i a lot of forum space devoted to spamassassin, though trolling through it I haven't really come accross what I seek.

On my install, with Plesk 8.1, Smartermail 4.0 running on a windows 2003 box, I find that the spamd.exe process (spamassassin daemon) will use any and all of the avialable cpu, as well as 300-400Mb of RAM. Looking throught the info on spamassassin, this can be sorted by reducing the number of child processes, using the -m switch when the spamd process is launched. Herein lies the problem, as i am buggered if I can find where spamd is loading from. It is not a service, not being loaded from the registry, nor any of the usual ways windows loads up processes, which leads me to believe that Smartermail is firing up the daemon during its load phase.

I would really like to add in the -m switch for spamd if only I can find where the hell it gets loaded from.

    Can anyone help.

The Windows port of SpamAssassin is single-threaded, so the -m setting is really irrelevant and won't help you at all. And yes, the spamd process is launched by the SmarterMail service.

    SmarterMail extensions:
    DKeyEvent SM - DomainKeys/DKIM
    SAVASM - SpamAssassin Virtual Appliance

Yes, SmarterMail does launch the spamd.exe process (as well as stop it).

In 4.1 a change was done to explicitly limit spamd.exe to one child process (-m 1) and no spares. Before, it was assumed that since it was single threaded it wouldn't ever open multiple children, but I think it did (or tried) anyways. That's really the only way to account for the memory usage.

I upgraded from 4.0 to 4.1, spamd.exe is going up to 200+ megs.  I created a batch file which runs once a day to kill this process.  Any update from y'all to keep spamd.exe under control?  My server is really NOT heavily utilized at this point.
