    Bandwidth totals

    Hi,

can anyone give me an idea of how the bandwidth totals are achieved in smartermail4.

    Taking into consideration the following:

That a client sends an email to our server of say 500kb and the server then sends it out to 10 recipients ie 10 x 500Kb means the user has sent out 5500kb.

     and vise versa

If the client receives an email from outside of 500kb and pops it off the server or uses imap to download the traffic should be 1Mb for that user the mail.

Is this infact the way it is calculated in both directions per email or just once ?

    Regards

    Keith

    Re: Bandwidth totals

pretty lame answering your own posts, but anyway

I see that when sending emails out as a user ie 10 emails to different oubound or internal users get logged, ie 1 mail up to server and then 10 emails out to users.. only the 10 emails that are sent out get logged, the initial email upload is ignored, now in a case of 1 up 10 out means u loose 10% which is acceptable, however if your traffic is 1 up 1 out it only logs actually 50% of the traffic.. ie the email going out.

If you receive a 5mb email from outside user it logs it as 5mb, but when the user pops it down, that traffic is ignored.... once again 50% logged effectively.

So if you really look at the bigger picture the logs show the users the amount of bandwith they used by receiving  or sending out emails on the SMTP outbound (To outside users) and Inbound side (From outside users), however the user still smtp'd the email to your server or poped it down which also entials the use of traffic which is effectively not logged..

Maybe Smartermail could put an option in the admin settings to allow the logging of this traffic in the user totals as well for ISP's so we can get the more accurate picture of traffic used by clients. Obviously if you use Smartemail as a mail system for a company you are not worried about the traffic on your local lan only in and out to the internet, however as an ISP you worry about messages (From outside mail users) smtp'd in to your server and then popped off by customers, and vise versa (Customers Sending) messages smtp'd in and smtp'd out to the outside customers. These count as a single total.

I definately need this to be a true reflection of used traffic, as I pay for traffic in or out regardless of who is using it..
