I'm testing a copy of version 4 before upgrading our version 3 installation and I just noticed that you no longer have the magnifying glass icon in the webmail for Message Preview. What happened? Did I miss setting this option when I installed.

That feature no longer exists. It has been replaced by the preview pane.

This is no longer an option.  You should notice that messages are displayed in the same screen (below your inbox).  This is supposed to be faster than the magnifying glass I believe.

Hhhmmm, I don't know how clicking on each message and having it load in the preview pane could possibly be faster than hovering over it and seeing a preview without opening it. I hope you consider putting it back into a future version.

The message preview required much more page downloading than the current preview pane in use.  After upgrading, I noticed my webmail ran much smoother and faster.

By "faster" we mean faster for the server in general. With the old preview, it had to parse each and every message returned to the message list and generate the preview ahead of time and download that preview, regardless of clicking on the message or not. With the preview pane, it only needs to parse and download the message when you click on it.

 It would be nice to have the option to select which way to preview, either the classic 'floating preview' or the new preview pane, or both.  Ideally, set like the skins - server default, domain may override, user may override.

 Faster is relative.  For example, we use Smartermail primarily as an internal product - latency and transfer rate are irrelevant because everyone is local.  Browser render time is more issue, but as long as the message lists are 100msgs or less, it's not an issue.  Server performance is no issue either: our 70-something users can't slam our hardware if they try.  But those extra clicks add up to a lot of wasted time - it's not just a click.  It's hundreds of clicks for every user every day (yes - prolific emailers).
