Crov:This is a feature that has long been requested but never eventuated. The short reason is because of the smartermail/declude cahoots relationship. To add this feature would potentially render declude redundant as it would open up a vast array of spam tools that we could be using. This would then compromise the smartermail/declude relationship.
The best that smartermail could offer was the external command tool.
Personally I think this stifles the product development of smartermail. Anyway there are alternatives just hire a programmer from elance.com and you'll be away - worked for us.

I don't know how you can get more extensible than SmarterMail running any command line process and letting it have full access to the .eml/.hdr files. That can quite literally do anything. Like I said, it can add a spam weight to the mail, it can write in it's own headers, it can delete the message, etc, etc. And as Declude said, you are way off about us being in "cahoots." I think that can be demonstrated by us including SpamAssassin with SmarterMail 4. We want nothing but to make SmarterMail as robust as possible, which is why we teamed up with Declude in the first place.

It's my personal opinion that anyone in "cahoots" with a company like Declude is trouble to start with. I have nothing good to say about Declude since the originator sold the company. I have a LOT of bad to say, but this is not the place.

If anybody is interested, I am experimenting with building a service that functions like SpamAssasins spamd daemon in .NET. I have the daemon part working, and I am now working on a skeleton plug-in framework and a plug-in that parses URI's and IP's out of the message, checks them against user defined RBL/DNSBLs, and assigns them a user defined score(like InvURIBL). I am doing this in my spare time(which isn't much) so I don't know if I will ever finish, however, I am curious to find out how many people would be interested, and if anyone who is proficient in VB.Net would be interested in helping... Yes, I would be interested, but I wouldn't be of any help in development. Sorry.

It's really a shame that nobody is interested in this project.
I'd buy SmarterTools an invURIBL subscription if that would get them to cooperate in getting this working.

I'm happy to report that Darrell at Invariant Systems got invURIBL to work natively in SmarterMail. I've been involved in the beta testing and am extremely happy with the results. We combine SpamAssassin and invURIBL and it's very unusual to see a spam message slip thru. invURIBL compliments SpamAssassin nicely, and is extremely cost effective.
I don't often endorse products, but invURIBL is one that I like very much.
I don't know when Darrell will have the product ready for all to use, but I'm sure it will be soon.
Low cost, easy to setup, and works great with SmarterMail. No extra hardware needed. Seems like a no brainer to me.

I tried InvURIBl, but I missed some essential (IMO) features: e.g. Keyword matching, Charset checking, Backup function, etc.
I wrote a VBS script, which does the trick very well and surprisingly efficient so far. I have disabled Greylisting (don't like the delay) and the SM Bayesian filter (a pain to keep trained), and I never used SpamAssassin.
In case anyone would like it, see this thread: http://forums.smartertools.com/forums/thread/37344.aspx

Our application focuses on URI filtering specifically including many advanced URI tests. The features you mention keyword matching, charset matching, etc are all done within SmarterMail anti-spam features. And done very well I might add. However, IMO, under the guise of "testing" our application its amazing how similar
your configuration options seem to match invURIBL along with the functionality. They do say imitation is the highest honor I suppose...

Not trying to start a flame war here, but let me explain a bit. It is not my intention to "imitate" InvURIBL. The main reason I decided to make this script was lack of keyword checking in InvURIBL. For the URI checks I actually got my inspiration from general info on i-net (surbl site + liks, discussion forums about SA URIBL ruses), and I took a good look at the SpamAssassin URI checks (which I am sure you are also familiar with). The config options just are "common sense" to save valuable resources, and any comparable application has similar options (SpamAssassin for example). Unfortunately SM Content filters are very limited and awkward to work with (compared with Merak, which I came from), and still with one important limitation: it does not provide *global* content filters. The same goes for bayesian filtering, which is a pain to train. I just wanted to share my hobby project with other small-setup users. I am sure that if companies need a solid high-performance EXE tool in a production environment they will buy InvURIBL rather than use some free VBS though!
