    Problems upgrading v3 to v4:

I'm experiencing the exact same problem as described in http://forums.smartertools.com/forums/thread/25620.aspx but as there are no replies there (Beta forum), I'll try here.

Install/upgrade went ok, I changed my IIS6 website to ASP.NET 2.0, there are no TCP/IP filters, no firewall is active. I can open the webpage to login in, but when logging in it answers with the "unable to connect to smartermail service" error. Log files indicate no problems, the SmarterMail service is started but the netstat command reveals that the service is not listening on any port.

The problem didn't disappear after installing, rebooting, removing, reinstalling, etc., so I reinstalled the latest v3 and that worked immediately.

    Suggestions welcome!

    Thanks...

Follow #3 in this post, its most likely a corrupt .NET 2.0 installation.  You might even want to re-download the install from Microsoft's website.  There have even beencases that this process needed to be done twice.  http://forums.smartertools.com/forums/thread/26138.aspx

Tim, thank you for your quick reply. I'll try reinstalling .net 2.0, although I run several websites on it without problems. I'll post the results back here...

Unfortunately that didn't help. I uninstalled v4, rebooted, uninstalled dotnet v2, rebooted, installed .net v2 + security hotfixes, rebooted again and finally installed v4 again. Twice. All that on a production web server ouch. I'm sure it will work on any other machine, but that's not an option unfortunately.

Are there any other options or log files to check?
    Thanks again!

I have a similar (identical) problem.  However, this is a new install, on windows server 2003, iis6.0, .net v2 + hotfixes.  Smartermail install file version is 12.0.0.49977.  Install completed with no noted problems.

I can open the webpage to login in, but when logging in it answers with the "unable to connect to smartermail service" error. Log files indicate no problems, the SmarterMail service is started but the netstat command reveals that the service is not listening on any port.  In particular, port 17001 has nothing listening.

     Please advise next steps.

     Thanks

Has any progress been made on this problem? I see that a newer version is available, but before I try installing that one, I want to know if anything has changed regarding this issue?

    Thanks!

    Just tried build 2592:

This is still the same problem.

Is there anyone that cares about this, and can help find a solution?

I don't understand why the SmarterTools people are so quiet, how can I ever try to sell this mail server to my clients if I can't get it to work on my own server?

Thanks in advance for a reply.

make sure the smartermail service is enabled and start, and smartermail webservice is disabled and stop in windows services.

Too bad this is not an option for the free version, I'm currently not in the position to use payed support plans.

Same problem, but my server IS responding on port 17001

    Setup

Frontend Server IIS6 running on Windows Server 2003 Webedition.
    Backend Server Smartermail v.4.0.2592

I copied the MRS folder to my frontend IIS webserver and created a website pointing to that folder.
    I edited the Web.config <add key="MailServiceAddress" value="IPC"/> to <add key="MailServiceAddress" value="BACKENDSERVERIP"/>

I checked out the official post to see if the Backend Server was listening to port 17001 - IT IS
I ran PortQueryUI (From Microsoft) from the Frontend Server and the Backend Server is listening on port 17001

I still get the Unable to connect to SmarterMail Service.

This was working just fine in Smartermail 3.X

    I'm running SmarterMail Enterprise version.

(I opened a Ticket - earlier today) I'll report back if I get anything

The problem that is occurring is that in .NET 2.0, exceptions will not get sent across a remoting channel between two different servers, by default.

Although hosting the MRS and service on different machines is something we have not officially supported, this will be fixed in version 4.2 of SmarterMail.
