This page outlines common uses for SmarterMail in real-world environments.
Many of these configurations can be deployed in your network for little or no cost,
and can greatly improve the stability of your existing infrastructure. This is especially
true if you use another mail server product that is having a hard time keeping up
with your current load. By adding SmarterMail in one of the roles
below, you can increase the stability and longevity of your email system.
This unique method of architecture customization allows you to organize SmarterMail
servers to meet your needs.
Use SmarterMail as your primary mail server in order to provide your customers with
an unmatched email service. Provide industry standard connection methods, like POP3,
SMTP, and IMAP4. Allow your users to view their email online in the language of
their choice by taking advantage of SmarterMail's international design. For more
information on setting up small business deployments, refer to the white paper:
Reduce load on your primary mail server and protect your internal network by installing
SmarterMail on another server that can be used exclusively for receiving and pre-scanning
incoming email. This server can have any number of third-party components installed,
such as Trend Micro ServerProtect for virus scanning, or Declude for spam prevention.
The server receives the email, passes it through the scanning processes, and forwards
the email on to the primary server.
In high-volume scenarios, dedicate a server to spooling outgoing messages. This
will significantly reduce the load on your primary mail servers, and will allow
you to quickly recover in the case one of your IP addresses is blacklisted by an
external email provider.
SmarterMail is capable of handling both businesses large and small. Listed below

In the case that your primary mail server goes down, ensure that your users will
continue to receive incoming email by setting up a backup MX server. When the primary
mail server cannot be contacted, email servers on the web will attempt delivery
to the backup MX server. When the primary server comes back online, the backup MX
server will deliver all held email.
SmarterMail's unique configuration system allows you to set up a server to act as
multiple roles at once. Set up a single server to be Incoming and Outgoing Gateways
in order to improve the flow of traffic through your network without large cost
increases. Or setup two mail servers to be Backup MX Servers for each other. If
one server is down for maintenance, the other will receive and properly route the
email.
